How to Maintain Your Vacuum Cleaner

Like many other household tools, a vacuum cleaner needs to be maintained and taken care of on a regular basis to ensure that it will function as expected. A vacuum cleaner is often a great investment in terms of price and effort taken to decide which model and type to purchase, hence you want to inspect them frequently and care for it to avoid paying a high cost when it is severely broken down. Some might say to inspect and clean a vacuum cleaner on a quarterly basis is enough. We recommend you inspect the machine every month and clean it when needed. Here are some tips you can use to maintain your vacuum cleaner today!

1. Empty Bags

With a bagged vacuum cleaner, it is recommended that you empty the bag when it is two-thirds full because the air needs to be able to pass through the bag in order for the suction to work properly. You should use the right size and right brand for your vacuum cleaner because the wrong bags may damage your vacuum. Bags should be replaced at least every year or even more if your place is on the larger size, or if you have multiple in-house pets.

If you have a bagless vacuum cleaner, don’t forget to empty it often, or after every use if possible to prevent the dirt and debris from accumulating inside the machine.

2. Clean the Brush Roll

Next, you should clear out the brush roll which is located at the bottom of the machine. Over time, a lot of long stringy objects like hair, floss, or rubber bands will get caught in it thus making it unable to roll effectively. You should gently remove the brush roll and clean out any long hair or large dust particles sticking to the brush. Use a damp rag to wipe clean or wash the brush roll with soap, just make sure you let it completely dry before putting it back in. Finally, you can spray lubricant into the container where the brush roll is housed to keep it moving properly.

3. Check the Belt

Typically the brush roll is attached to a belt, which you should check periodically for any wear or tear, checking its stretching ability and condition. If the belt is too stretched out and frayed, it should be replaced sooner rather than later. Depending on the frequency of use, the general rule is to replace the belt every six months to a year.

4. Clean Filter

The filter is the last exit of air where the vacuum captures the dirt and dust so they won’t fly around while you vacuum. It is important for your machine’s functionality as well as your health to clean the filters once a week and wash them once per month if they are washable. No need for soap or scrubbing the filter, putting it under running tap water will do the cleaning job wonderfully. For a vacuum cleaner that comes with a HEPA filter, it is even more crucial to keep the filter clean because the HEPA filter is designed to help improve the indoor air quality.
